You're still showing up, managing the day and being there for the people who need you.
But underneath it, you're carrying something: anxiety that won't quiet down, a relationship pattern that keeps repeating, or a quiet sense that you don't feel like yourself anymore. You've probably already tried to handle it on your own, or been in therapy before that helped for a little while but didn't really change anything.
You're not looking for someone to just nod along. You're looking for someone who will be honest with you and help you actually change the pattern.
I'm Andrea D. Schoon, MA, LMFT, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in California. With 18 years in private practice, I bring the kind of pattern recognition that comes from sitting with a wide range of struggles, not from a textbook, plus the perspective of my own decades of marriage and raising four children.
You Don't Have to Explain Everything Twice
My distinction isn't one specialty or technique. It's the depth and breadth of hands-on experience behind the chair, combined with lived perspective.
That range of settings, preschools, residential treatment, public schools, autism services, and sober living, shapes how I work with every age I see now, not just the ones I specialized in.
Decades of marriage and raising four children also inform how I work with couples, parents, and families, not just my clinical training.
And I recognize patterns quickly, often before a client has fully named them. That comes from sitting with so many different kinds of struggle over the years, and it tends to move the work past the surface faster.
I Won't Just Tell You What You Want to Hear
My style is warm, collaborative, and insight-focused, but I'm also willing to challenge you. I help clients gain confidence in themselves and their abilities, and build an internal voice that's supportive and kind instead of critical.
I provide an atmosphere of warmth and comfort while also helping you gain the confidence to advocate for yourself, set clear boundaries, and hold high expectations of yourself and the people in your life.
I'd rather be direct with you than tell you what you want to hear. That's not a lack of warmth. It's part of it.
Is This the Right Fit?
I work best with people who are ready to understand themselves better, learn new skills, and make real changes in their lives or relationships. You don't need to have it all figured out, just be open to looking honestly at your part in the pattern.
This probably isn't the right fit if you're looking for someone to simply agree with you, or want to talk without working toward a goal. Therapy works best when it's collaborative and directed toward growth, and I'd rather tell you that upfront than waste your time.
Why I Do This Work
As far back as I can remember, I knew I wanted to help people. Even as a child/teen, friends came to me when they needed someone to listen. Looking back helping people has always felt like who I'm meant to be.
That calling took me through nearly every setting where people need support before I ever opened a private practice. I taught preschool, then directed four preschools. I helped build a full-inclusion program for children with developmental disabilities.
I worked as a residential counselor for children who had experienced abuse, and as a behavioral consultant supporting children with autism and their families. I worked inside public schools, and my clinical internship included time in sober living. Eighteen years ago, I moved into private practice, working with children, teens, adults, couples, and families ever since.
A Little About Me
I am a proud mom of 4 along with my husband of a decades long marriage. For fun you'll usually find me at the barn. I've been an avid horseback rider for years, and when I'm not there, I'm at the gym, hiking, or biking. Nature is where I recharge, and I think it makes me a better therapist.
Whenever You're Ready, I'm Here.
If you think we might be a good fit, I'd love to hear from you. Call 714-421-6115 or email andreaschoon@gmail.com for a complimentary 15-minute consultation. I respond within one business day.
