Individual Therapy
In-Person in Huntington Beach & Newport Beach · Virtual Throughout California
Individual therapy with me is a place to feel truly seen, heard, and understood, and to leave with practical tools you can use in everyday life.
I'm Andrea D. Schoon, MA, LMFT, and I work with adults across Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Orange County who are carrying anxiety, depression, stress, relationship difficulties, grief, a hard transition, or a general sense of not feeling like themselves.
My Approach to Individual Therapy
Healing begins when you feel accepted without judgment and supported through what you're facing. Change follows from insight: once you can see the patterns that have been keeping you stuck, you can start to do something different.
But insight on its own only goes so far. Lasting change comes from pairing that understanding with practical tools you can carry into everyday life, so the work continues after our sessions end.
Signs Individual Therapy Could Help
You've likely already tried handling it alone, or talked it through with people close to you. That effort counts, and it isn't wasted. What's often still missing is a space built specifically to work through the pattern underneath it, with someone alongside you.
"I can't keep doing this."
"I feel completely overwhelmed."
"I'm exhausted all the time."
"I don't feel like myself anymore."
"I've tried everything I can think of and nothing works."
Concerns Individual Therapy Can Help With

Sadness, depression, and emotional exhaustion
Relationship conflict and communication difficulties
Low self-esteem and self-doubt

Feeling stuck in patterns that aren't serving you anymore
What Changes With Individual Therapy
Clients I work with often move toward a better understanding of themselves, healthier coping strategies, and stronger relationships. Many describe feeling more confident and better equipped to meet challenges with peace instead of overwhelm.
You may leave sessions with a presence you can take home with you, something steady to lean on between sessions, and over time, a growing trust in the strength you already have within you. This work takes time and looks different for everyone.
What to Expect in Individual Therapy
Our first session is a chance to get to know each other. We'll talk through what's going on, explore your goals, and start building a plan together, as a team. Each session is meant to leave you with insight, tools, or both.
I draw on cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, attachment-based, and psychodynamic approaches, depending on what fits you and what you're working through.
This work goes best when you're ready to engage in the process and open to a new perspective. It's probably not the right fit if you're looking for an immediate fix without doing the work together.

Questions About Individual Therapy
What is individual therapy?
Individual therapy is one-on-one work between us, focused on helping you feel truly understood while building practical tools for what you're facing. It's different from talking things through with a friend because the work is structured around your specific patterns and goals.
How is this different from therapy I've tried before?
If you've been in therapy that helped you understand yourself but didn't change much day to day, this is meant to go further. We won't stop at insight. Together, we'll build practical tools you can actually use the next time the old pattern shows up.
What if I don't know exactly what's wrong, I just feel off?
That's a common place to start. Many people arrive with a general sense that something isn't working rather than a clear diagnosis, and the first few sessions are where we start making sense of it together.
How long does individual therapy typically take?
There's no fixed timeline. Most clients begin weekly and we adjust the pace as you make progress and your goals shift. Some people work with me for a few months around a specific transition, others for longer as new patterns surface.
Do you offer virtual individual therapy?
Yes. I see individual therapy clients in person at my Huntington Beach and Newport Beach offices, or virtually anywhere in California.
Do you accept insurance?
I don't bill insurance directly, but I provide superbills on request so you can seek reimbursement if your out-of-network benefits allow it.
