Family Therapy
In-Person in Huntington Beach & Newport Beach · Virtual Throughout California
I'm Andrea D. Schoon, MA, LMFT, and I work with families across Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Orange County navigating conflict, communication difficulties, parenting struggles, sibling conflict, blended family adjustment, divorce, or a major transition.
My Approach to Family Therapy
Many families I work with know something isn't working, but haven't found a way actually to change the pattern. Everyone plays a part, usually without meaning to, and that's not about blame. It's about seeing the dynamic clearly enough to do something different.
That's where we start, together, as a family. I include everyone who's part of what's going on, and we build practical ways to communicate and respond to each other differently, not just talk about what's wrong.
Signs Family Therapy Could Help
If this sounds like your household right now, there's a place to work through it together.
"We can't seem to communicate without it turning into a fight."
"Every day feels like a battle since our family changed."
"The kids are constantly at each other, and it's exhausting."
"I feel like we're all just going through the motions."
"Since the divorce, nothing feels stable."

What Changes With Family Therapy
Families I work with often build stronger communication, a better understanding of one another, and healthier ways to resolve conflict. Many describe every family member feeling more heard, respected, and supported at home.
This work takes time and looks different for every family.
What to Expect in Family Therapy
Our first session focuses on understanding each family member's perspective, identifying strengths and challenges, and setting shared goals. The environment is supportive and structured, so every voice gets heard while your family learns healthier communication and problem-solving skills.
I draw on family systems, attachment-based, and solution-focused approaches, depending on what fits your family.
This work goes best when everyone is willing to listen, learn, and contribute. It's probably not the right fit if the goal is to place blame on one family member rather than work together.

Questions About Family Therapy
What is family therapy?
Family therapy is structured work with your whole family, or the members involved in what's going on, focused on understanding the pattern behind the conflict and building healthier ways to communicate and solve problems together.
What if one person in our family doesn't want to participate?
That's common, especially at first. Sometimes it helps to start with whoever is willing, and other family members join in once they see the process isn't about blame.
Will you take one family member's side?
No. My role is to help every voice in the room be heard, not to decide who's right. Family therapy works when everyone is willing to look at the pattern together, not point at one person as the problem.
Do all family members need to attend every session?
Not necessarily. Who's involved in a given session depends on what we're working through. We can talk about what makes sense for your family as we go.
Do you offer virtual family therapy?
Yes. I see families in person at my Huntington Beach and Newport Beach offices, or virtually anywhere in California.
Do you accept insurance?
I don't bill insurance directly, but I provide superbills on request so you can seek reimbursement if your out-of-network benefits allow it.
