Teen Therapy (Ages 13-17)
In-Person in Huntington Beach & Newport Beach · Virtual Throughout California
For many teenagers, therapy is the one place they don't have to filter themselves. That's important to me. When teens feel safe enough to be honest, real change can begin.
I'm Andrea D. Schoon, MA, LMFT, and I work with teens across Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Orange County who are managing anxiety, depression, school stress, low self-esteem, friendship struggles, or family conflict. Many arrive feeling overwhelmed, misunderstood, or unsure how to cope with the pressure they're under.
My Approach to Teen Therapy
Teenagers need a space where they can be themselves without worrying they're going to be judged, lectured, or have every conversation repeated to someone else.
Building trust is one of my highest priorities because trust is what allows therapy to work. From the very beginning, I explain confidentiality to both teens and parents so everyone understands what is private, what I may encourage a teen to share themselves, and the situations where I am legally and ethically required to step in for safety.
My office is a place where teenagers can talk honestly about friendships, family relationships, anxiety, depression, school, identity, dating, or simply the pressures of growing up. My role isn't to take sides or tell them who they should be. It's to help them better understand themselves, build confidence, develop healthy coping skills, and navigate life's challenges with greater resilience.
I believe teenagers do their best work in therapy when they know they are respected, heard, and accepted. My hope is that every teen who walks through my door leaves feeling a little more understood, a little more confident, and better equipped to handle whatever life brings next.
Signs Teen Therapy Could Help
If any of this is familiar, there's a place to work through it together.
"I don't feel like myself anymore."
"I'm so stressed about school I can't think straight."
"I feel like nobody understands what I'm going through."
"My teenager seems so overwhelmed, and I don't know how to reach them."
"We're fighting more than we used to."

What Often Changes With Teen Therapy
Teens I work with often build healthier coping skills, greater confidence, and stronger relationships with family and friends. Many describe better communication at home and more emotional resilience when things get hard.
This work takes time and looks different for every teen.
What to Expect in Teen Therapy
Our first session is for getting to know each other, talking through what's going on, and setting goals together. The environment is supportive and nonjudgmental, and you'll learn practical tools to manage emotions, build confidence, and navigate what you're facing.
I draw on cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, attachment-based, and family systems approaches, depending on what fits you.
This work goes best when you're willing to take part, even if you're unsure at first. It's probably not the right fit if therapy is being used as a punishment rather than support.

Questions About Teen Therapy
What is teen therapy?
Teen therapy is one-on-one work with your teenager, focused on helping them feel understood while building practical tools for what they're facing, whether that's anxiety, stress, or a hard season with family or friends.
Will you tell my parents what I say in sessions?
Your privacy matters in our work together, and I respect your need for trust. At the same time, your parents stay part of the process in a way that supports you both. We can talk through what that looks like early on, so everyone knows what to expect.
What if my teenager doesn't want to go to therapy?
That's common, and it's still worth reaching out. A lot of teens come around once they realize this isn't about being lectured or fixed. I'm happy to talk with you first about how to approach it.
Do you work with teens on their own, or do parents join sessions?
Sessions are primarily one-on-one with your teen, with parents staying involved in a way that respects their need for trust. Exactly how that looks can be part of what we figure out together.
Do you offer virtual teen therapy?
Yes. I see teen therapy clients in person at my Huntington Beach and Newport Beach offices, or virtually anywhere in California.
Do you accept insurance?
I don't bill insurance directly, but I provide superbills on request so you can seek reimbursement if your out-of-network benefits allow it.
