Couples Therapy
In-Person in Huntington Beach & Newport Beach · Virtual Throughout California
I'm Andrea D. Schoon, MA, LMFT, and I work with couples across Huntington Beach, Newport Beach, and Orange County who feel disconnected, keep having the same argument, or are working through trust issues, infidelity, or emotional distance. This is for relationships in crisis, and for relationships that are simply ready to be stronger.
My Approach to Couples Therapy
I provide highly personalized, insight-oriented work for couples who want lasting change, not just fewer arguments this week. Many couples I see have been to therapy before. They understand the pattern, they just haven't been able to change it.
That's where we start. We look at what happens between you in the moment, not just what you say happened afterward, and build practical ways to respond to each other differently.
Signs Couples Therapy Could Help

"I don't feel heard anymore."
"We used to be so connected, and now there's just distance."
"I don't know if we can rebuild trust after this."

Parenting disagreements
Feeling unheard
Feeling more like roommates than partners
What Changes With Couples Therapy
Couples I work with often build healthier communication, deeper connection, and more effective ways to work through conflict. Many describe rebuilding trust and finding tools that make the relationship feel more fulfilling.
Even in difficult seasons, this work can help you understand each other better and make thoughtful decisions about your future, together.
What to Expect in Couples Therapy
Our first session focuses on understanding your relationship: hearing from each of you, identifying strengths and challenges, and setting shared goals. The environment is balanced, so both of you feel heard while learning practical skills to communicate, rebuild trust, and strengthen what you have.
I draw on the Gottman Method, along with attachment-based and family systems approaches, depending on what fits your relationship.
This work goes best when you're both willing to participate honestly and look at your own part in the pattern. It's probably not the right fit if one of you is looking for someone to take sides.

Questions About Couples Therapy
What is couples therapy?
Couples therapy is structured work between the two of you and me, focused on understanding the pattern behind your conflict and building practical ways to communicate differently. It's built around your relationship, not generic advice.
Will you take sides?
No. My role isn't to decide who's right. It's to help you both be heard and look honestly at the pattern you're both part of, so you can actually change it together.
What if only one of us wants to go to couples therapy?
That's a common starting point. Sometimes one partner reaching out first is how the process begins, and the other partner often becomes more open once they see it isn't about blame.
Does couples therapy mean our relationship is in trouble?
Not necessarily. I work with couples in crisis and with couples who are simply ready to be stronger. Reaching out is often less about how bad things are and more about wanting something better.
Do you offer virtual couples therapy?
Yes. I see couples in person at my Huntington Beach and Newport Beach offices, or virtually anywhere in California.
Do you accept insurance?
I don't bill insurance directly, but I provide superbills on request so you can seek reimbursement if your out-of-network benefits allow it.
